We envision working side by side with communities to design socially and environmentally just places, transforming architectural practice into an ecosystem of care.

We don't work with jerks.
Sundberg Kennedy Ly-Au Young Architects is now Side x Side Architects! The change in our name embodies our dedication to changing the practice of architecture-as-usual by broadening the spectrum of design services. We achieve this by working side by side with mission-driven organizations to create buildings and spaces that unite the physical beauty of architectural design with the enduring resilience of equity, social justice, and environmental responsibility.

VALUES
Values for an Ecosystem of Care.
A transactional economy is based on systems where those who are most impacted are not invited to the table to make decisions. By contrast, in an ecosystem of care:

— Working side by side outperforms the sole inspired genius.
— Climate change is real, it is a crisis, and it is our collective responsibility.
— All creatures deserve healthy, nontoxic environments.
— Buildings give back more than they take.
— Social justice and equity drive design.
— A scarcity mindset is replaced by abundance.
JUST

More about Just
OUR HISTORY
Where we started from.
Side x Side was originally founded in 2012 as SKL Architects by three colleagues with a shared vision of architecture’s role in society, Rick Sundberg, Gladys Ly-Au Young, and John Kennedy. In 2023, Rick retired from the firm to pursue new ventures, and the firm became Side x Side Architects. Our new name embodies a dedication to changing the practice of architecture-as-usual by broadening the spectrum of design services available to mission-driven organizations.
